AV Furniture or an AV Mount: Which is the More Sustainable Choice?
When setting up a home theater, media room, office, or commercial AV system, there is more to consider than how your equipment will look. The way you support your TV, speakers, components, and other electronics can also affect the long-term sustainability of your setup.
So, is AV furniture or an AV mount the more sustainable choice?
In many situations, mounting can be the better option—but the answer depends on the application, the products you choose, and how long you plan to use them.
Less Material = Less Footprint
One of the biggest advantages of an AV mount is that it generally requires less material than a piece of furniture. A wall mount, ceiling mount, or other mounting solution can support a large display without requiring a cabinet, table, or substantial stand underneath it.
That can mean using fewer raw materials while also reducing the physical footprint of your AV system. A wall-mounted TV, for example, doesn't require a large entertainment center simply to hold the screen.
This doesn't automatically make every mount more sustainable than every piece of furniture. A poorly made mount that needs to be replaced after a few years may create more waste than a durable piece of furniture that lasts for decades. That's one reason it's important to invest in high-quality, well-made, reliable brands.
Durability is a Sustainability Feature
Here's the takeaway: The most sustainable AV solution is often the one you don't have to replace!
Look for mounts and AV furniture made from durable materials and designed to support the equipment you actually own. A well-designed mount can remain useful even when you replace your television or other components, particularly when it accommodates common mounting standards and a reasonable range of screen sizes and weights.
Adaptability extends the useful life of the mounting hardware and reduces the need to purchase an entirely new support system every time your technology changes.
What Happens When Your Technology Changes?
Technology moves quickly. TVs get larger, displays get thinner, and AV components change constantly. This is where a flexible mount can have an advantage.
A universal mount can potentially remain in place through multiple generations of displays, provided the new equipment falls within the mount's specifications. Instead of replacing an entire entertainment center because your new TV has different dimensions, you may only need to adjust or replace the mounting hardware.
AV furniture can be more difficult to adapt. A cabinet designed around one particular television or component configuration may become obsolete when your equipment changes.
That doesn't mean furniture is inherently unsustainable. Quality AV cabinets can provide useful storage for receivers, game consoles, media players, speakers, and other equipment, and a well-built piece can be repurposed elsewhere in the home.
Think Holistically About Your System
Sustainability isn't only about choosing between a mount and a piece of furniture. Consider what your system actually needs.
If your goal is a clean setup with minimal materials and maximum flexibility, an AV mount may be the better choice. Mounting a display can also free up floor space and eliminate the need for a large piece of furniture.
If you have several components that need ventilation, storage, and easy access, AV furniture may make more sense. In that situation, buying a durable piece that can accommodate future equipment may be more sustainable than trying to eliminate furniture altogether.
The best solution may even be a combination: mount the display while using a smaller, purpose-built rack or cabinet for the electronics. You could even consider mounting the display and buying a second-hand, used piece of furniture for your components.
