Wall Mount, Floor Stand, Ceiling Mount, Cart or Tabletop Stand: Which Should I Choose?

Different way that TVs and monitors can be mounted or used on stands - Blog

There's no single best way to mount a TV or monitor. The right solution depends on where the display will be used, who needs to see it, whether it needs to move, and what mounting surfaces are available.

Here's how the major options compare.

Choose a Wall Mount for a Permanent, Space-Saving Installation

For most conventional home TV installations, a TV wall mount is a logical starting point. Wall mounting keeps the screen off furniture and can create a clean, space-efficient setup.

The next question is how much movement you need.

Low-profile TV wall mounts are well suited to straightforward viewing areas where the screen rarely needs adjustment. Tilting mounts can help when the display must sit higher on the wall. An articulating swing-out mount is useful when viewers need to see the screen from different areas of the room.

Wall mounting is also common in offices, classrooms, restaurants, waiting rooms, and retail environments where permanent display placement makes sense.

Choose a Floor Stand When You Can't—or Don't Want to—Use the Wall

A floor stand provides many of the space-saving advantages of a wall-mounted display without permanently attaching equipment to the wall.

Monitor stands and floor pedestals can work particularly well in rental properties, trade shows, reception areas, retail spaces, offices, and rooms with walls that aren't suitable for mounting.

For a home setup, TV stands with mounts combine elevated display mounting with furniture for components and accessories.

Choose a Ceiling Mount When Wall Space Is Limited

Sometimes the best mounting surface isn't a wall at all.

Ceiling mounts can be useful in restaurants, gyms, commercial facilities, bedrooms, medical environments, and rooms with large windows or limited usable wall space.

They can also place displays above furniture, merchandise, or other obstacles. Because the display is suspended overhead, correct installation and adherence to the mount manufacturer's requirements are especially important.

Choose a Cart When the Display Needs to Move

If one display needs to serve several locations, permanently mounting it may defeat the purpose.

Presentation carts and audio-video TV carts allow displays to move between classrooms, conference rooms, training spaces, and event areas. This can be more practical—and potentially more economical—than installing a separate screen in every room.

For educational and business environments, mobile carts can also provide room for computers, AV components, cameras, and other presentation equipment.

Choose a Tabletop or Desktop Stand for Smaller Displays

For monitors, touchscreens, tablets, and smaller displays, mounting to a wall may be unnecessary.

Desktop monitor mounts and stands can free up desk space and improve screen positioning in offices and workstations. iPad and tablet stands and mounts can support applications ranging from point-of-sale systems to interactive displays.

Which Display Mount is Right for You?

Start with four questions:

  • Does the display need to move?
  • Is there a suitable wall?
  • How much positioning flexibility do viewers need?
  • Is the installation permanent or temporary?

A permanent home theater may call for a wall mount. A classroom may benefit from a cart. A retail display might work better on a floor stand, while an environment with limited wall space may call for a ceiling mount.

Choose the mounting format based on how the display will actually be used—not simply on how you want it to look.
